How to Make a Flipnote When Flipnote Studio on Your DSi Has Been Bricked
Based on my experiences with Flipnote Studio
Flipnote Studio was like a gateway creative software for people like me and my siblings. When my oldest sibling had a DSi, we all had fun using Flipnote Studio. We made animations at first, but we then made comics and pretend they're either a film or a TV show. Then her DSi died. The early 2010s were big on our imaginations. Then, my middle sibling got a DSi from a friend in 2015. We were back to doing what we love: making flipnotes.
By the time we reached 2020, I had to learn how to archive the flipnotes from the DSi, and into Google Drive. My youngest sibling had the idea to make flipnote comics using Google Slides. We treated the comics on Slides as films or TV shows, just like Flipnote Studio.
Then, the middle sibling got delusional about how deleting flipnotes is art when all I care about is preserving art history. Then, we all had our flipnotes, and the software, deleted. And the DSi was gone.
In 2024, I had to have a comeback for flipnotes. So, my therapist, Alex, gave me a DSi for my birthday. It did have Flipnote Studio. However, the software was bricked. I tried to have TwilightMenu ready, but that didn't work. I did have my two microSD cards with their adapter. So, I decided to use the Nintendo DSi Camera application and use the tools to make the photos look like a Technicolor flipnote comic.
With that, flipnotes were reborn, even if we moved on from Flipnote Studio. The Google Slides flipnotes returned, and I even made a DIY mini zine as a film school, but for making comic-like flipnotes. You can find my zine at my Ko-fi Shop below.
My siblings and I are, to this day, learning how to make flipnote viewing for ourselves more fun. Just recently, I was happy to discover that I can present flipnotes on Google Slides to my video projector.
